President Trump announced on Dec. 4 in Utah that he would be shrinking two national monuments, Bears Ears National Monument and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, by about 85% and 45%, respectively. He plans on removing a total of about 2 million acres of land from federal protection and handing it over to the state of Utah using the Antiquities Act of 1906. This land includes many important archaeological sites and landmarks culturally significant to local Native American tribes, some of which are suing Trump in federal court over the legality of his move.
