Boy basketball edges past Palatine

In a crosstown battle of the early season unbeatens, the Fremd boys basketball team took on Palatine on Dec. 5. In their closest game of the year so far, the Vikings went into the fourth quarter leading by two points, but a late basket by Palatine’s Mike Williams gave the Pirates a one point lead with under a minute left in the game. With the clock winding down, senior guard Xavier Williams hit the winning basket, a three pointer with ten seconds remaining propelling the Vikes to a 43-41 win and improving their record to 6-0 on the year.

As one of Fremd’s two returning starters, Williams, who finished with a game high 13 points, brings the experience necessary to be a clutch player. Head coach Bob Widlowski describes the importance of Williams’s leadership to the team on and off the court.

“I think that he’s stepped up into a new role this year and he’s done a really nice job right off the bat,” Widlowski said. “Every year’s a new season and a new team and he’s done a good job for us getting us started for the season. We’re looking for him to continue to lead this year.”

The Vikings spread the ball around in the game and made the extra pass, leading to four three pointers and an impressive 75% shooting percentage in a defensive struggle.

As the season progresses, Fremd will look to build upon this success to secure victories in other hard fought games. Widlowski outlines the importance of the win over Palatine.

“I think it’s important because it’s our first conference game,” Widlowski said. “It was good for us to get started in the conference but it was also one of the most exciting Fremd games I’ve been a part of.”

With a target on their backs following the success of last year’s regional championship team, Widlowski expects nothing but close contests for the road ahead.

“I think that that’s how the conference is going to be, it’s going to be a battle,” Widlowski said. “That was a good early test for us because that’s how the games are going to be for the rest of the season.”
